We’re excited to announce that applications are now open for the Envision Research Summer School , taking place from 19th–22nd August 2025 . This free programme is designed for young people aged 16–17 from Black and underrepresented backgrounds , particularly those considering careers in medicine, STEMM, or scientific research . Over the course of three virtual days and one in-person day at the University of Cambridge , participants will take part in an immersive group research project exploring real-world health inequalities. With the support of medical student mentors and expert facilitators, students will gain hands-on experience in research, develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, and present their findings in a university setting. The programme also includes talks from leading academics and doctors, mentoring support, and the opportunity to connect with other aspiring medics from across the UK. Responsibilities & Duties Lead the conceptualisation and development of compelling podcast topics and episode ideas relevant to Black doctors and medical students, in collaboration with the No Scrubs podcast hosts. Craft engaging episode outlines, scripts, and interview questions , ensuring high-quality and impactful content alongside the hosts. Identify, invite, and coordinate with potential guests , managing all logistical arrangements for recording sessions. Oversee the recording process , ensuring optimal audio quality and managing any technical aspects. Manage the editing and post-production of podcast episodes , including sound mixing and adding music/intro/outro. Manage the uploading and distribution of podcast episodes to all relevant hosting platforms and directories. Develop and implement promotional strategies for new episodes across Melanin Medics' social media channels, website, and other communication platforms. Create engaging promotional assets , such as audiograms and visual quotes, to maximise episode reach. Monitor and analyse podcast performance metrics (e.g., download numbers, listener demographics) to identify trends and areas for improvement. Play an active role in engaging in Melanin Medics Projects throughout the operational year, contributing to the organisation's overall communications efforts. Not only would this increase black representation in medical research, but it could also improve patient outcomes, including those from deprived populations and ethnic minorities. So far, MMRN has completed one national research project, published four PubMed-indexed original articles, presented 22 abstracts at national/international conferences, and won ten academic prizes. The programme takes a holistic approach with aims to help Black African and Caribbean final year medical students navigate their last year of medical school and help them thrive in the next phase of their life as doctors. THIS PROGRAMME IS CURRENTLY ON PAUSE What the programme includes The programme has been developed to ensure that there is a good balance between excelling academically, strengthening social support and participating in sessions that will enrich students both personally and professionally while receiving tailored support for their medical careers and future aspirations. The students are paired with a mentor who is a current doctor in their mutual area of interest and they will receive one-to-one mentoring sessions over the course of the year. The mentorship scheme is fantastic. The match with my mentor was almost identical. They are a current working professional within my chosen area of interest, hence provide relevant advice pertaining to my current stage, but also beyond, in the future when looking to apply.I have continued to engage with Melanin Medics as I have found the tutorials, webinars, and all therapy sessions invaluable. They often provide further assistance, and in other circumstances provide salient information not routinely covered within the curriculum."
