The goal of the Melanin Medics Research Network is to improve research engagement and attainment amongst medical students and doctors of African and Caribbean heritage. The Network is open to all medical students and doctors regardless of their ethnicity or race. RESEARCH The Melanin Medics Research Network Join the Melanin Medics Research Network to receive tailored information regularly on research opportunities, prizes, and grants (including those from external organisations) and more. JOIN NOW Improving research engagement and attainment amongst underrepresented groups The goal of this network is to improve research engagement and attainment amongst medical students and doctors of African and Caribbean heritage. Not only would this increase black representation in medical research, it could also improve patient outcomes, including those from deprived populations and ethnic minorities. The Melanin Medics Research Network is open to all medical students and doctors regardless of their ethnicity or race. Our Aims To organise national/international collaborative studies that would give medical students and doctors the opportunity to experience high-quality research in action, develop new skills, and gain publications as either collaborators and/or authors. To create a platform for research mentorship where experienced researchers would provide one-to-one support and/or research projects (remotely or face to face) to medical students or doctors of African and Caribbean heritage. To organise workshops/ seminars that will develop its members’ research skills and knowledge, and educate them on research careers, including the academic clinician pathway. To provide information regularly on research opportunities, prizes, and grants (including those from external organisations) to the network members. The aims of the study were: 1. To investigate factors that may affect medical students’ participation and attainment in research in the UK 2. To understand perceptions of research, motivation for, and the barriers to research engagement and attainment amongst medical students in the UK. 3. OUR STORY From an online blog to a national charity changing the narrative Founded in 2017 by Dr Olamide Oguntimehin, Melanin Medics has championed increased positive representation of black medical students and doctors in the United Kingdom. Our history The focus of the organisation when founded in 2017 was to function as an online platform sharing both experiences and advice to black African and Caribbean aspiring medics and medical students and showcasing positive representation of this particular demographic. However, having increased both our reach and capacity we desired for the organisation to have a greater impact on those we serve as well as those who support and engage with our organisation. We recognised the need for a representative organisation enabling long-term support starting from pre-medical school entry right through to practising as a doctor leading to a generational impact. Having started as a blog, Melanin Medics has rapidly grown to become one of the UK’s leading black-led charities dedicated to supporting current and prospective Black African Caribbean doctors. MEET THE TEAM Making an impact across generations Dr Olamide Oguntimehin MBBS PGCert FInstLM Founder & Chief Executive of Melanin Medics Melanin Medics was founded by Dr Olamide Oguntimehin (formerly known as Dr Olamide Dada) in 2017. Based on her own experience applying to medical school and disheartened by the lack of representation she saw upon starting her medical degree. Dr Oguntimehin had a deep desire to see greater positive representation of African and Caribbean medical students and doctors. Dr Olamide Oguntimehin set up the ‘Melanin Medics’ blog whilst being in a UK Medical School. When applying to Medical School, she had struggled to find a platform that provided support and advice as a medical student of black African and Caribbean descent. Having been successful in her application, Olamide realised that she had the opportunity to fill this gap and pursued it. Dr Olamide Oguntimehin is currently a junior doctor, leadership fellow and charity leader. She is the Founder and Chief Executive of Melanin Medics. Olamide is an advocate for racial equality in Medicine, widening access and is passionate about tackling health inequalities. She authored a report with the NHS Race & Health Observatory on ’Pulse Oximetry and Racial bias’ subsequently led to a government review of medical devices and potential bias. She is a Member of the GMC Equality and Diversity Advisory Board for differential attainment and member of the BMA EDI Advisory Group. She is an alumnus of the Healthcare Leadership Academy and a fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Representation in UK Medical Schools Black students make up 12% of applicants to medical school and only 5% of medical school entrants to standard medical degree courses. 02. Differential attainment in postgraduate exams UK medical graduates of black/black british heritage have lower pass rates in specialty exams (62%) compared to UK white trainees (79%). 03. Disproportionate disciplinary action Doctors from ethnic minority backgrounds were twice as likely to be referred to the GMC by their employer for fitness to practise concerns than white doctors. 04. Ethnicity pay gap Median basic pay for white consultants is 3.5% higher than black/black British consultants, showcasing the ethnicity pay gap. 05. Racism and discrimination 60% of doctors who experienced racism said that the incident had negatively impacted their wellbeing, including causing depression, anxiety, and increased stress levels. 06. Absence of diversity and inclusion in the workplace 55% of BAME doctors said there was respect for diversity and a culture of inclusion in their workplace compared to 75% of white doctors.
