We are thrilled to announce the publication of the Enrichment Programme Evaluation Report . This report highlights the impact of our 10-month development initiative for final year Black African and Caribbean medical students in the UK. Transitioning from medical student to Foundation Year 1 doctor is a significant challenge, and our programme was designed to build career confidence, readiness, and advancement through one-to-one mentoring, peer networks, and accessible resources. The evaluation of two cohorts showed that mentoring played a pivotal role in enhancing preparedness, providing valuable career insights, and fostering supportive connections. This report not only celebrates the successes of the programme but also identifies further opportunities to support students in their transition to FY1 roles. We are committed to exploring and addressing the unique challenges faced by Black African and Caribbean medical students. Organisational Relationships Melanin Medics Research Network (MMRN) was created in February 2021, and our main goal is to improve research engagement and productivity among medical students and doctors of African and Caribbean heritage. Not only would this increase black representation in medical research, but it could also improve patient outcomes, including those from deprived populations and ethnic minorities. So far, MMRN has completed one national research project, published four PubMed-indexed original articles, presented 22 abstracts at national/international conferences, and won ten academic prizes. We are running our second national study investigating microaggressions in UK medical schools. Our Aims To organise national/international collaborative studies that would give medical students and doctors the opportunity to experience high-quality research in action, develop new skills, and gain publications as either collaborators and/or authors. To create a platform for research mentorship where experienced researchers would provide one-to-one support and/or research projects (remotely or face to face) to medical students or doctors of African and Caribbean heritage. To organise workshops/ seminars that will develop its members’ research skills and knowledge, and educate them on research careers, including the academic clinician pathway. The early pre-clinical to clinical transition is a critical period where targeted support may help prevent widening of attainment gaps within undergraduate medical education and postgraduate medical training. There is also limited research into preventative, skills-based interventions for underrepresented student groups. By combining skills training with wellbeing, peer support, and career development, MedSteps works to reduce barriers, improve confidence, and create a sense of belonging; ensuring participants are better prepared to thrive at medical school and beyond.
