Annual Competition & Prize

In recognition of Black History Month, Melanin Medics are pleased to announce the 2nd year of our annual competition. This years 'Research Proposal Prize' gives medical students and doctors the chance to propose a research project that can be implemented through our Research Network. Medical students and doctors in the UK are invited to submit a research proposal of no more than 500 words. The top three proposals will be offered the opportunity of an oral presentation at the annual melanin medics conference, national prize certificate and receive a monetary awards.

The Theme:

 

A prospective clinical and/or medical/surgical education research or audit project.

The Background:

 

Melanin Medics Research Network was created to improve research engagement and attainment amongst medical students and doctors of African and Caribbean heritage. We have created the research proposal prize to encourage research engagement and creativity as well as offer students and doctors the opportunity to lead and experience high impact research in action.  Our network will offer the winning entries the opportunity to  to coordinate high impact multi-centre projects across the UK.

Who can enter?

 

​All medical students and doctors based in the United Kingdom, regardless of your background/ethnicity.

Submission Guidelines:

​

Submissions must be a maximum of 500 words total. Please include the following sections:

​

  • Title

  • Background

  • Objectives

  • Methods

  • Impact: How will your research/audit project impact healthcare and/or medical/surgical education?

  • Ethical and financial considerations

  • References (if applicable). Note that this is not included in the word count. No more than 5 references.

Your proposal should have a multi-centre study design

 

This prize is open to both new research projects and existing research projects that are currently operating at a local level. 

 

Please note that multiple entries from a participant is prohibited and would lead to an automatic exclusion from the competition. Individual submissions only. No group submissions.

Prize​​

​

The top three proposals will be offered the opportunity of an oral presentation at the annual melanin medics conference, national prize certificate and receive a monetary awards (1st place - £100, 2nd place - £50 and 3rd place - £25). The winning entries will be offered the opportunity to implement their research idea through our research network.

​

The national prizes, oral presentations, and monetary awards will be awarded subject to the proposal meeting a minimum quality standard.

Deadline​

 

31st October 2021 at 11:59pm​

Proposals will be submitted as a Microsoft Word document email attachment sent to  academia@melaninmedics.org 

​

After the deadline, your submission will be blinded and assessed based on originality, relevance, feasibility, study design and potential impact.
