We’re excited to announce that applications are now open for the Envision Research Summer School , taking place from 19th–22nd August 2025 . This free programme is designed for young people aged 16–17 from Black and underrepresented backgrounds , particularly those considering careers in medicine, STEMM, or scientific research . Over the course of three virtual days and one in-person day at the University of Cambridge , participants will take part in an immersive group research project exploring real-world health inequalities. With the support of medical student mentors and expert facilitators, students will gain hands-on experience in research, develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, and present their findings in a university setting. The programme also includes talks from leading academics and doctors, mentoring support, and the opportunity to connect with other aspiring medics from across the UK. Date: 19–21 August (virtual) + 22 August (Cambridge visit) Cost: Free to attend Eligibility: Students aged 16–17 from Black or underrepresented backgrounds Spots are limited. We are excited to announce our Interview Webinar Series targeted at Year 13 & S6 (Scottish Equivalent) students and postgraduate applicants. The MM Interview Webinar will be a focused session aimed at demystifying the medical school interview.We will talk through the interview process, its various formats and the expectations of interviewers. We will address the barriers black students can face during university admissions, but also the ways in which our difference can be our greatest strength. We will hear from current and previous medical students about their personal interview experiences, and hear from a university admissions expert. Webinar Details: The webinar will take place on 23rd November, from 9am to 10:30am. Please join at least 5 minutes before. PROGRAMMES SurgIn: The Lewin Programme A career development programme designed to support aspiring and current surgeons in training of Black African and Caribbean or mixed race heritage practising in the UK. SIGN UP NOW Confidently navigate the pathway needed towards a successful surgical career Community: Expand your network and connect with your peers and seniors Access: Receive the tools and resources to access various roles in surgery Advancement: To support career advancement and leadership development in surgery Retention: To address the challenges pertaining to the black surgical experience About the programme SurgIn: The Lewin Programme is a 10 month career development programme designed to support aspiring and current surgeons in training of Black African and Caribbean or mixed race heritage practising in the UK. The programme takes a unique approach to establish a community of like-minded individuals who share an interest in surgery and support their career development through a series of curated sessions. We aim to provide programme participants with the insight needed to achieve successful careers in surgery. This programme is supported by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN Applications will close on the 30th of June What the programme includes 'SurgIn' stands for Surgical Insights. Our participants will confidently navigate the pathway needed towards a successful surgical career. As a SurgIn Programme participant, you will be required to do the following: Commit to attending at least 4 sessions over the course of the year Participate in career development session activities Submit feedback on the programme Applying to the SurgIn Programme does not guarantee you a place as spaces are limited. SIGN UP NOW What participants say We pay ode to Monica Lewin who was was the first Jamaican woman to become a a fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. She studied Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London and after graduating she worked at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital and the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital. Ms Lewin was undoubtedly a trailblazer at a time when there were few black or minority ethnic surgeons in the UK. Her career illustrates the personal determination that often underlies extraordinary achievement by people from under-represented groups. We wish to honour her legacy. Become a mentor on the programme Ambassadors must be a UK-based Surgeons registered with the GMC You will participate in an in-person session to give participants a better understanding of how to succeed in their surgical careers. This is an informal mentoring role. Ambassadors can range from Core surgical trainees to surgical registrars, consultants or retired surgeons ; due to our mixed cohort of participants. Applying to the SurgIn Programme does not guarantee you a place. Applications are assessed based on the quality. As an SurgIn Ambassador, you will be required to do the following: Attend and contribute to a SurgIn session during the programme year Utilise the available training resources Submit feedback on the SurgIn Programme Suggest and share resources with SurgIn participants Receive a certificate supported by the Royal College of Surgeons of England at the end of the programme for your contribution (Education & Leadership). (If you will be missing one day, please inform programmes@melaninmedics.org in advance). Travel bursaries are available for students who have financial difficulties. The talks on both the virtual and in person days were really interesting and I was able to learn new things. The buddies were extremely helpful with the project too. I also enjoyed meeting other aspiring medics from all over the country and enjoyed making new friends. The programme is extremely unique and the fact that we not only received talks from expert about research but actually got to conduct our own research meant that I could improve a variety of skills." Become a mentor on the programme We are looking for enthusiastic medical students to join us as buddies for our participants. Buddies will support the young people in their research project, to crtitically appraise a research paper and present their findings. This role is ideal for those with research experience or a strong interest in research, and critical appraisal skills are essential. This can include but is not limited to students who have intercalated. Buddies will receive a stipend of £300 and travel costs will also be covered.
