The programme takes a unique approach to establish a community of like-minded individuals who share an interest in surgery and support their career development through a series of curated sessions. We aim to provide programme participants with the insight needed to achieve successful careers in surgery. This programme is supported by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN Applications will close on the 30th of June What the programme includes 'SurgIn' stands for Surgical Insights. Our participants will confidently navigate the pathway needed towards a successful surgical career. Aspiring surgeons in foundation training, core surgical training, non-training programmes and junior registrar grades up to ST5 of Black African and Caribbean or mixed race heritage. You will be interact with surgical seniors and peers during the in-person sessions. As a SurgIn Programme participant, you will be required to do the following: Commit to attending at least 4 sessions over the course of the year Participate in career development session activities Submit feedback on the programme Applying to the SurgIn Programme does not guarantee you a place as spaces are limited. SIGN UP NOW What participants say We pay ode to Monica Lewin who was was the first Jamaican woman to become a a fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. She studied Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London and after graduating she worked at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital and the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital. Ms Lewin was undoubtedly a trailblazer at a time when there were few black or minority ethnic surgeons in the UK. Her career illustrates the personal determination that often underlies extraordinary achievement by people from under-represented groups. We wish to honour her legacy. Become a mentor on the programme Ambassadors must be a UK-based Surgeons registered with the GMC You will participate in an in-person session to give participants a better understanding of how to succeed in their surgical careers. This is an informal mentoring role. Ambassadors can range from Core surgical trainees to surgical registrars, consultants or retired surgeons ; due to our mixed cohort of participants. The MM Interview Webinar will be a focused session aimed at demystifying the medical school interview.We will talk through the interview process, its various formats and the expectations of interviewers. We will address the barriers black students can face during university admissions, but also the ways in which our difference can be our greatest strength. We will hear from current and previous medical students about their personal interview experiences, and hear from a university admissions expert. Become a mentor on the programme We are looking for enthusiastic medical students to join us as buddies for our participants. Buddies will support the young people in their research project, to crtitically appraise a research paper and present their findings. This role is ideal for those with research experience or a strong interest in research, and critical appraisal skills are essential. This can include but is not limited to students who have intercalated. Buddies will receive a stipend of £300 and travel costs will also be covered. The programme takes a holistic approach with aims to help Black African and Caribbean final year medical students navigate their last year of medical school and help them thrive in the next phase of their life as doctors. The mentorship scheme is fantastic. The match with my mentor was almost identical. They are a current working professional within my chosen area of interest, hence provide relevant advice pertaining to my current stage, but also beyond, in the future when looking to apply.I have continued to engage with Melanin Medics as I have found the tutorials, webinars, and all therapy sessions invaluable. They often provide further assistance, and in other circumstances provide salient information not routinely covered within the curriculum."
