We’re excited to announce that applications are now open for the Envision Research Summer School , taking place from 19th–22nd August 2025 . This free programme is designed for young people aged 16–17 from Black and underrepresented backgrounds , particularly those considering careers in medicine, STEMM, or scientific research . Over the course of three virtual days and one in-person day at the University of Cambridge , participants will take part in an immersive group research project exploring real-world health inequalities. With the support of medical student mentors and expert facilitators, students will gain hands-on experience in research, develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, and present their findings in a university setting. The programme also includes talks from leading academics and doctors, mentoring support, and the opportunity to connect with other aspiring medics from across the UK. Date: 19–21 August (virtual) + 22 August (Cambridge visit) Cost: Free to attend Eligibility: Students aged 16–17 from Black or underrepresented backgrounds Spots are limited. SIGN UP NOW Become a well-rounded, competitive Medicine applicant Experience: Receive intensive support with your medicine application Learn: Develop an appreciation and understanding of the wider scientific context of medicine Grow: Improve your transferable interpersonal skills About the programme The programme has been developed to ensure that there is a good balance between excelling academically and participating in activities that will enrich students both personally and professionally while gaining insight into the medical field. The students are paired with a mentor who is a current medical student and they will receive one-one virtual mentoring sessions over the course of the year. APPLICATIONS OPEN - APPLY NOW ! The programme takes a holistic approach with aims to help Black African and Caribbean final year medical students navigate their last year of medical school and help them thrive in the next phase of their life as doctors. APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN Programme Start: May 2026 Programme End: December 2026 What the programme includes The programme has been developed to ensure that there is a good balance between excelling academically, strengthening social support and participating in sessions that will enrich students both personally and professionally while receiving tailored support for their medical careers and future aspirations. The students are paired with a mentor who is a current doctor in their mutual area of interest and they will receive one-to-one mentoring sessions over the course of the year. As a Enrichment Programme student, you will be required to do the following: Commit to meeting with your mentor a minimum of once a month Attend the programme launch event, mentor meetings, webinars and other programme sessions Submit a log of short reflections and feedback on the programme Applying to the Enrichment Programme does not guarantee you a place. Melanin Medics were looking to support the wellbeing of Black African and Caribbean medical students and doctors especially considering the impact of COVID 19. I applied to the programme on the last day, relatively close to the deadline. Unbeknownst to me, it is proving to be one of the best support systems thus far in my final year. The mentorship scheme is fantastic. The match with my mentor was almost identical. They are a current working professional within my chosen area of interest, hence provide relevant advice pertaining to my current stage, but also beyond, in the future when looking to apply.I have continued to engage with Melanin Medics as I have found the tutorials, webinars, and all therapy sessions invaluable. They often provide further assistance, and in other circumstances provide salient information not routinely covered within the curriculum." We are excited to announce our Interview Webinar Series targeted at Year 13 & S6 (Scottish Equivalent) students and postgraduate applicants. The MM Interview Webinar will be a focused session aimed at demystifying the medical school interview.We will talk through the interview process, its various formats and the expectations of interviewers. We will address the barriers black students can face during university admissions, but also the ways in which our difference can be our greatest strength. We will hear from current and previous medical students about their personal interview experiences, and hear from a university admissions expert. Representation in UK Medical Schools Black students make up 12% of applicants to medical school and only 5% of medical school entrants to standard medical degree courses. 02. Differential attainment in postgraduate exams UK medical graduates of black/black british heritage have lower pass rates in specialty exams (62%) compared to UK white trainees (79%). 03. Disproportionate disciplinary action Doctors from ethnic minority backgrounds were twice as likely to be referred to the GMC by their employer for fitness to practise concerns than white doctors. 04. Ethnicity pay gap Median basic pay for white consultants is 3.5% higher than black/black British consultants, showcasing the ethnicity pay gap. 05. Racism and discrimination 60% of doctors who experienced racism said that the incident had negatively impacted their wellbeing, including causing depression, anxiety, and increased stress levels. 06. Absence of diversity and inclusion in the workplace 55% of BAME doctors said there was respect for diversity and a culture of inclusion in their workplace compared to 75% of white doctors. Are you passionate about research and widening participation? Do you have a keen interest in racial equity in medical education and training? Are you looking for an opportunity to develop your professional skills? Deadline: 23rd of August 2024 at 11:59pm Melanin Medics Research Network (MMRN) was created in February 2021, and our main goal is to improve research engagement and productivity among medical students and doctors of African and Caribbean heritage. Not only would this increase black representation in medical research, but it could also improve patient outcomes, including those from deprived populations and ethnic minorities. So far, MMRN has completed one national research project, published four PubMed-indexed original articles, presented 22 abstracts at national/international conferences, and won ten academic prizes.
