In recognition of Black History Month, Melanin Medics are pleased to announce the commencement of our annual essay competition. This essay prize gives undergraduate medical students and doctors the chance to write an in-depth piece on medicine and the African and Caribbean community. All are invited to answer the essay question in less than 1000 words. The shortlisted essays will be published on our website and the writer of the winning essay will be rewarded with a certificate and a cash prize.
The Question:
The year 2020 has seen the rise of a new pandemic in the form of COVID-19. It has also reminded us of another ongoing pandemic across the globe - systemic racism. Please reflect on how this year's events have affected the African and Caribbean community and how understanding this impact can improve our future medical practice.
